The individuals will be responsible for selecting the first-place winner of the Metropolitan Design Challenge and recipient of a $3,000 prize at the IDS (Interior Design Show) Toronto Gala on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The first-place winner will be announced during IDS Toronto on Friday, January 20, 2023.
Metropolitan is pleased to announce the 2023 Metropolitan Design Challenge Judges:
• Houmed Arjomand, Design Director, Gluckstein Design Planning Inc.
• Johnson Chou, Principal, Johnson Chou Inc.
• Javid Jah, Artist, JAH Inc / XYZ Collective
• Neil James, Owner, Stylegarage
• Jessica Scarpelli, Senior Designer, Gluckstein Design Planning Inc.

The judges will select the first-place winner from four creations on display at IDS Toronto from January 19-22. All of the installations at the show were designed and will be built by Metropolitan Design Challenge finalists, selected from over 20 entries from several Ontario design schools. The judges will evaluate which of the four finalists best realized their creative vision to transform an 8’ x 8’ x 8’ blank space into an award-winning showpiece featuring Kentwood, Metropolitan’s line of premium hardwood floors.
“We are very fortunate to have Houmed, Johnson, Javid, Neil, Jessica, and Jeff take time out of their busy schedules to be a part of the Metropolitan Design Challenge Judges Panel,” said Dave Sandover, president at Metropolitan. “The judges will provide the finalists with invaluable feedback and insights into their design processes and aesthetic outlooks.”
Metropolitan, a Canadian-owned and Canadian-operated flooring manufacturer and distributor, created the Metropolitan Design Challenge to showcase the talent and creativity of interior design students studying at Ontario colleges and universities.
Metropolitan invites the public to attend IDS Toronto from January 21-22 and vote for their favourite Design Challenge entry. The entry with the most votes from the public will be named the People's Choice winner and receive $1,000.
